San Sebastian 2024

Gatxupa

Friday 23 August 2024, my birthday and we had a 08:55 flight from London City into San Sebastián. Nice and easy. A quick read of the news and I was asleep for the rest of the flight.

No bags meant our exit from the airport was quick and we were soon in a taxi to Hotel Lasala where we’d stayed two years earlier.

After checking in we headed straight out and to Gatxupa, the Mexican we had enjoyed on our last visit, and it didn’t disappoint!

Our room

By the time we returned to the hotel our room was ready. We soon realised it was the exact same room as we’d had on our stay two years earlier - 301.

Our room

Our room had a lovely view over the bay and the harbour.

Birthday run

After a nap I summoned the energy for a run and completed a 6.8km run around the bay.

On the far side of the bay holes in the cobbles allowed sea water from the incoming waves to jet into the air.

Birthday celebration

The hotel very kindly brought me a complementary bottle of champagne for my birthday.

Pintxos

That evening we wandered around the old town and stopped at Tamboril. For some reason I’d managed to forget how small the bars were and the art form required to place an order. I was very glad to be there with Tammay who had all the necessary skills! Through fear of not getting a seat at another bar I suggested we ordered a large plate of the seared tuna each and a tomato salad to share. In the end that was more than enough.

We sat on a bench near our hotel and shared an ice cream.

We returned to the hotel and had a cocktail on the rooftop bar. It was a lovely evening but the bar was surprisingly quiet.

Morning run

Saturday 24, I struggled out of bed and put in a 10.6km run along the river and around the bay.

Coffee with a view

We sat outside the cafe on the corner and had a morning coffee. We then walked into the old town and passed Nestor with the idea of putting our names down for another slice of his acclaimed tortilla but the queue was already quite long.

We picked up a take away coffee and sat on a bench looking out at the bay.

Lunch at Bodegon Alejandro

We progressed a bit further around the bay before heading back in the direction of our hotel and on to Bodegon Alejandro for lunch. It was Michelin recommended and it didn’t disappoint.

We did however hit what must be a new low. The fresh bread that they served with the meal was lovely but we only ate half of the loaf… the other half went into Tammay’s hat in her bag!

We then returned to the hotel’s rooftop bar with the idea of spending the afternoon reading but the forecast rain came in and we retreated to our room for another nap and a game of Rummikub.

Dinner at Nobu

The rain that afternoon was quite heavy but thankfully it stopped by the time we were ready to walk to the Nobu hotel on the other side of the bay.

Dinner at Nobu

We played a couple of games of cards in the 2nd floor terrace bar accompanied by a couple of ‘White Cotton Cloud’ cocktails.

The bar wasn’t serving Rock Shrimp Tempura so we moved to the restaurant for a light dinner.

We sat at the bar and watched the chefs work.

Morning run

Sunday 25, it was still raining when I woke so I happily delayed my morning run. Within an hour it was dry and I headed out, around the bay, then over to the river and around the ‘hill’ before doing a few laps in the old town to push my final distance up to 10.6km.

Enjoying the walk

After a freshen-up and a couple of bananas in the room we made the short walk back to the little coffee shop in the old town. We took them on a walk around the hill and along the other bay to the east. From there we walked back to the Mexican restaurant for lunch accompanied by a few daiquiris!

Dinner at Casa Urola

We spent the afternoon at the hotel’s rooftop bar doing a little reading but mainly snoozing! Once we lost our shade we retired to our room for a couple of games of Rummikub while enjoying the complementary Champagne and the sound of the hustle and bustle floating up to our balcony.

That evening we walked around the old town stopping in a few of the shops. We found a little gallery selling prints from a local artist and decided we’d return the following day.

We went to Casa Urola for dinner.

We managed to nab a single stool and a space at the back of the little restaurant. Tammay elbowed her way to the bar to put in our order.

We picked up another tub of ice cream and shared it overlooking the bay.

Morning run

Monday 26, I went for a final run, putting in a little extra distance (12.1km) to complete loops of both bays and the mountain.

While Tammay was having a shower I popped back out to pick up some ramen from a Chinese supermarket. The bananas we’d picked up the day before were my breakfast.

San Sebastian Funicular

We picked up another take-away coffee and walked around the bay to the funicular station. We clearly arrived at ‘rush hour’ but thankfully the 30 minute queue was moving relatively quickly so it didn’t feel too bad.

San Sebastian Funicular

It was just a short ride to the top.

Views over San Sebastián

We spent about 30 minutes walking around the little amusement park at the top, enjoying the lovely views over San Sebastián. Thankfully there was no queue for the return ride to the bottom!

We walked back into the old town and returned to Casa Urola for a light lunch. This time we managed to get a table (I think it was the same one we’d had 2 years earlier).

On the short walk back to the hotel we stopped at the gallery and bought 2 prints. The smaller was framed but the larger was not. I pondered if I’d be able to make a frame myself…

We collected our bags from the hotel and jumped into a taxi. Check-in was swift and it wasn’t too long before we were on board and on our way home.
